Because of the impact of recent laws on families bringing pets into and moving pets from Naples, we are posting this information concerning leishmaniaisis testing from the Naval Support Activity Naples Veterinary Treatment Facility here:

The government of Regione Campania, which includes Naples, requires all dogs be tested for Leishmaniasis---and be negative----before they can leave the country on a commercial flight.

The test can be done up to one year prior to leaving. Since it takes about 20 days to receive test results, dogs should be tested annually to ensure that enough time to follow up on the results is alotted.

For any animals that come back positive on the initial test, secondary testing is required to confirm. This is done because not all dogs that have positive results are actively infected and require treatment. This requires additional time to be alotted, however, before the animal is issued a pet passport and allowed to leave on a commercial flight.

The test can be done up to one year prior to leaving. Since it takes about 20 days for test results to come back, it is recomemended that all dogs are tested annually to ensure that you have enough time to follow-up with medication if needed.

Please contact your veterinarian or the NSA Naples Veterinary Treatment Facility (DSN: 629-7913 Comm: 081-811-7913) for further information.
